Get Lit! exists because the Spokane community has supported it over the past 17 years, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Every year, we have so much to celebrate: our incredible staff of graduate & undergraduate students, our loyal volunteers, the local businesses & foundations who support us, the local writers who donate their time & expertise, and so many others.

As part of Eastern Washington University, we receive office space, computers, and the salary & benefits for one-full time staff position (Get Lit! director). We are grateful to the EWU English and Modern Languages & Literatures departments for that support. Beyond those crucial contributions, which have sustained the organization over the years, Get Lit! does not receive an allocated budget from the university for any programming or supplies. All of our programs, in addition to overhead costs such as phones, copies, and office supplies are paid for through grants, sponsorships, and individual donors, as well as festival ticket sales.

That means that every author we invite to Spokane, every venue that hosts an event, every print advertisement or festival poster you see, was paid for by a grant, a sponsor, a local Spokane business, or an individual donor like you. Get Lit! would not exist without your support.

Thank you. Thank you! THANK YOU! We are so proud and grateful to be part of this community, and with your support, we look forward to providing programs for many years to come.

While we welcome donations at any level, to become a Lit! Lover, we ask you for a pledge between $50 and $100, plus a commitment that you will tell two friends who might match your donation to Get Lit! Programs.

Volunteer

Interested in helping behind the scenes at Get Lit!? We would love to have you participate!

Volunteering gives you a great opportunity to meet people and enjoy yourself while also contributing to events that celebrate reading and writing. Many shifts are flexible, and locations vary.

Before and during each festival, we need people to:

  • collect donations/gifts
  • distribute posters and programs
  • help staff information tables
  • judge poetry slams
  • set up and tear down book tables
  • transport authors
  • serve as ushers and ticket takers

In return, we make sure our volunteers get:

  • a free Get Lit! or SpoYo T-shirt
  • tickets to one event for every 3-to-4-hour shift worked
  • and a big round of applause

To participate in the festival as a volunteer, send your name, phone number, and e-mail address to getlit@ewu.edu. If you are interested in volunteering in the Get Lit! Programs office during the year, as opposed to during one of the festivals, and have experience with fundraising, marketing, grant writing, organizing, or online networking, please mention this in your message. Thank you!
