Laura Read

168 FinalLaura Read is Spokane’s second poet laureate, appointed to the position in October of 2015. She is the author of one chapbook, The Chewbacca on Hollywood Boulevard Reminds Me of You, and one poetry collection, Instructions for My Mother’s Funeral, which won the 2011 AWP Donald Hall Prize in Poetry. She says much of her writing inspiration comes from her deep ties to Spokane. Laura has taught at Spokane Falls Community College for nineteen years. She has also led workshops at the Port Townsend Writers Workshop and the Salish School of Spokane and she helps to organize the Beacon Hill Reading Series at Spokane Community College. She has studied at Gonzaga University, American University, and Eastern Washington University, where she finished her MFA.
