Thom Caraway was named Spokane’s first poet laureate in 2013. He earned his PhD in English from the University of North Dakota, and an MFA in Creative Writing and BA in English, both from EWU. He is currently a senior lecturer in Whitworth University’s English department. Caraway serves as editor-in-chief of Rock & Sling, a literary journal, and is the publisher of Sage Hill Press. He is the author of A Visitor’s Guide to North Dakota: Poems, and has been published in several journals. Twice he has won the Thomas McGrath Prize for Poetry from the Academy of American Poets. Caraway is also on the board of directors at Project H.O.P.E., a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the West Central neighborhood and providing job training for at-risk youth.
